The Disadvantages of a Raw Food Diet

The raw food diet is becoming more and more popular. Specifically though the raw food diet advocated is one that is called "raw gourmet" or that has all your favorite cooked foods but in raw form. This type of diet is seen as great because you almost don't have to let go of your favorite childhood foods and you can still numb yourself out from the world when it gets too tough.

Unfortunately, although it is great that many people are eating more raw foods, it appears that they skimp on the most important raw foods - those being fruits and greens.

\"food Diet\"

Fruits seem to be tainted because of their sugar content. But the sugar content in fruits is good for you and should NOT be confused with refined sugar (unfortunately it is put in the same category). But the REAL problem of diet comes from eating too much fat, which is typically what this style of raw food diet is. In fact it can contain up to 70% fat from calories which is much more than what you get on your standard Western diet!

The Disadvantages of a Raw Food Diet

Some people do argue that raw fats aren't the same as cooked fats, but unfortunately too much fat is too much fat, no matter what form. Fat is a very hard to digest molecule, so when we eat too much it can take several days to be properly digested and thus can interfere with digestion of foods that follow its consumption. This is typically seen when people eat fruit in the morning and get an upset stomach. This isn't because of the fruit; this is because of the meal the night before which was fat-dense.

On top of this too much fat can lead to yeast problems. Briefly: when we consume too much it stays in the blood for a long while. When we eat something sugary this sugar cannot be digested and sent to our cells for much needed nourishment. Instead the sugar stays in the blood creating a dangerous situation. Fortunately though the Candida that is found naturally in your body, brings the sugar level down by multiplying and "eating" the sugar. This is a life-saving mechanism, however leaves you with yeast issues!

This particular raw food diet also seems to contain a lot of salt. Salt is only good to the body when we get it from eating dark leafy greens, melons, celery and other fruits and vegetables. Table salt, sea salt etc are not good for you at all. They dehydrate the body and create an imbalance.

As a result of these issues, a low fat cooked vegan diet is much better for you health wise (including lots of fresh fruits and greens also). If you want to do a raw food diet properly then you need to go low fat raw vegan. This can be hard to do because it won't give you the comfort that your old diet did, you will have to address any underlying emotional attachments you have to food BUT I can promise you it will be amazing.
